Lorna Briggs’s Breast Cancer Journey
My hair began to fall out about a week after my second chemo session. I brushed my hair and found a huge clump of hair within the brush. Although I knew it was going to happen it nonetheless knocked me for six. I cried, all of it appeared so really unfair. Why is that best short haircuts for 50 year old woman this occurring to me. This thought does come and go through my brain at irregular intervals.
My response to the hair loss was that I stopped brushing my hair greater than once a day, simply to scale back the velocity at which I was dropping it. I additionally stopped washing my hair as usually. I knew that when it was washed a major amount would fall out.
The realisation began to hit house, that I wasn’t going to be the fortunate one who miraculously went by the Chemo process and managed To not lose my hair. I had been instructed concerning the Cold Cap technique used in some NHS hospitals to assist minimise hair loss, however this isn’t obtainable within the hospital I am attending.
I contacted a local hairdresser a good friend had really useful who was experienced in slicing and styling wigs. Following a consultation together with her we agreed that she would cut the wig shorter (in the event you remember from my previous blog put up it was extraordinarily lengthy). So Garth from Wayne’s World was to be no more. Following this she would spotlight it and then I might return for an additional appointment to have it styled and completed.
Over the following week a dramatic change happened……large clumps of my hair fell out. Possibly I am in sync with the seasons, however as the trees were shedding their leaves, my hair was rapidly disappearing. My minimal brushing and washing of my hair was solely delaying the inevitable. I feel I did this as I wasn’t prepared to just accept that my hair, a giant part of who I see myself as was not going to be there. This was the half I struggled with most. I don’t think of myself as a vain person, but as a woman your hair is a part of the way you see your femininity and I discovered it troublesome to deal with this till I was compelled to.
When the hairdresser contacted me to say that the wig was colored and prepared for a final reduce and style I used to be sooo relieved. I might have hair once more!!!!!! I had been wearing a multitude of baseball caps, beanie hats and woolly hats (all in fabulous colours) to disguise what was happening (due to all of you who have purchased, knitted and crocheted hats for me).
The morning of the appointment I plucked up the courage and washed my hair, I remember being so overwhelmed with simply how a lot hair was mendacity in the bottom of the bath. I referred to as Craig up as I was feeling so emotional.
After a huge HUG, he manfully wrestled the hair from the bath and disposed of it for me. I did not look good after the hair wash, in truth I appeared horrific, a lot worse than before. A lot as I had misplaced a major amount of hair, there still had been long bits of hair all over my head however simply very thinned out. I appeared like an excessive Golem from Lord of the Rings…Not such a glamorous look let me inform you!!
At the hairdressers that afternoon I requested her to shave my head. It was so cathartic to have this done. She requested was I okay before she began, I believe she was frightened about me getting upset. I informed her I was prepared for it, all my crying about my hair was performed and this was what I wanted. I appeared so much younger and so much better as soon as this had happened.
She then put the wig on me so she might lower and magnificence it. She did an incredible job. The colour and magnificence is so much best short haircuts for 50 year old woman improved a lot much less Garth from Wayne’s World blonde and extra Holly Willloughby blonde!!
The hairdresser was so type and considerate, without making me conscious of it she had booked me into her remaining appointment of the day so the salon could be empty. I appreciated this a lot as being bald for the first time in public is de facto unnerving, unsettling and just for me… bloody weird.
So yes folks I now am bald, I appear like the two yr old model of myself (I had no hair aged 2 !!) I was born without any hair, nails, eyelashes or eyebrows…so clearly I’m returning to this state! Eyelashes are a lot thinned out and eyebrows are thinning however holding on at the moment!! I’m not having fun with the cold weather as my head isn’t as insulated because it once was. I now have a larger appreciation for those of you which are follically challenged lol!
Me aged two!! As a lot hair as I have now lol!!
There are some positives to all of this hair loss…less time needed for preparing, no dangerous hair days, saving money as no haircuts, colouring or waxing required, no need to shave your legs!! So always a silver lining!!!
